The Neverhood
Never before has a game's window on its own secret world begged so colorfully and texturally for you to stick your hand right into the thick of it and start moving your character around. Were this by some as-yet invented medium actually possible, however, the design would backfire, for the ability to encircle little Klayman's neck and squeeze all of the animated life out of him in the last third of the game would make ever finishing it impossible. Which is not to say that finishing the game isn't impossible anyway. While exploring The Neverhood's early stages and solving its puzzles - which involve moving or rearranging items, making connections, and mimicking a tune - are a pleasure to work your way through, things take a serious turn for the worse the deeper you go. Kind of reminds me of the the Saturday Night Live "Mr. Bill".

Players take control of 10 playable characters, each with their own unique caddy. The series is noted for crude humor, particularly in regard to the characters. For example, Ice Trey is a wigger who is likely to bust out a rhyme to get himself in the mood for the game.
Unique to the series is the "Composure Meter". The better you're playing, the higher your composure - the worse you're playing, the lower. The distance on your clubs increases/decreases as your composure goes up or down, respectively. This is designed to simulate frustration, the more shots you miss, the more frustrated you get. The more frustrated you get, the more
shots you miss. A solution to this vicious circle is beating your caddy, which increases your composure for each successful beating.

Penumbra: Overture
As with all effective horror, atmosphere is paramount here. Penumbra gets off to a Lovecraftian start with the lead character, Phillip, getting a letter out of the blue from his long-missing father. The old man was apparently declared dead some 30 years before, but that didn't prevent him from licking a stamp and directing his son to a safety deposit box filled with indecipherable
notebooks and a map of northern Greenland. All of this is more than a tad surreal. None of the backstory is explained, there is no character development, and you're not even clued in on why Phillip decides to head off to Greenland and wander around by himself in a blizzard. While this style of storytelling won't please fans of rigorous plots, the vagueness gives the game a
gauzy, dreamy vibe. All of the action takes place in a mausoleum-like abandoned mine, too, which heightens both the weirdness and the sense of being detached from the real world.

One special feature you won't find in a real dollhouse is the ability to magically redecorate with Sprites. Three fairies -- Sparkle, Flora, and Turnabout -- can move about the room (controlled by the child with the mouse). Twinkling lights and music show which objects the Sprites can change. Flora might change the bedroom rug and bedspread into a lush garden. Children find it fun to discover which things the Sprites can change and how they are transformed. Something else you won't find in an ordinary dollhouse is the secret mouse world. Mice leave a clue in each
room, describing where their mouse hole is. By clicking on a piece of cheese, the child will hear the clue. She may need to move some objects in order to find the mice's secret place. Once inside the mouse hole, there is another room to explore. There is an ice cream factory in the kitchen's mouse hole, a mouse wedding in the playroom's mouse hole.
